Day 1: The Journey Begins – From Nashville to Cape Town, with a Layover in London and a Side Trip to Windsor
The excitement was palpable as I escorted 16 MBA students from Tennessee Tech University on a 12-day study abroad adventure to South Africa. Our journey would take us to the stunning city of Cape Town and the wild landscapes of Pilanesberg National Park. But first, we had to get there.
Our first day of travel was a long one, beginning in Nashville and taking us to London Heathrow, where we had a nine-hour layover—just enough time for a mini adventure before continuing to South Africa. Rather than sitting in the airport, we decided to make the most of our time and took a short train ride to the charming town of Windsor.
Exploring Windsor
Windsor is a quintessentially British town, rich in history and brimming with charm. Just a short journey from Heathrow, it’s best known for being home to Windsor Castle, one of the official residences of the British royal family. The cobblestone streets, picturesque river views, and cozy shops make it an ideal spot to spend a layover.
When we arrived, the group scattered to pursue their own interests. I started my visit with a hearty English breakfast at The Ivy, a beautifully designed brasserie with a warm and inviting atmosphere. A traditional English breakfast is a must when visiting the UK—it consists of eggs, bacon, sausage, baked beans, grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, black pudding, and toast. It’s a filling and delicious way to start the day, and paired with a strong cup of English breakfast tea, it was exactly what we needed after our overnight flight (because you know how bad plane food is).
Touring Windsor Castle
After breakfast, I made my way to Windsor Castle, a breathtaking fortress with over 900 years of history. As I explored the grand halls and opulent state rooms, I used an audio guide to learn about the castle’s rich past and its role as a royal residence. St. George’s Chapel, the final resting place of several monarchs, was a highlight—its gothic architecture and intricate stained-glass windows were awe-inspiring.
A Taste of English Culture
Following my castle tour, I took a leisurely stroll through the town, popping into some of the charming boutique shops along the way. Windsor’s streets are lined with unique stores selling everything from fine teas and handmade chocolates to British souvenirs. Of course, I also stopped for a classic cup of tea at a cozy local café, soaking in the relaxed atmosphere of the town.
Before heading back to the airport, I couldn’t resist stopping at the Crooked House of Windsor, one of the most iconic buildings in town. This quirky, slanted structure dates back to the 17th century and is full of character. I wrapped up our Windsor excursion with a glass of wine, toasting to the adventure ahead before the group made our way back to Heathrow to continue our journey to South Africa.
Onward to South Africa
With Windsor explored and our spirits refreshed, we boarded our overnight flight, ready for the next leg of our trip. Next stop: Cape Town! Stay tuned for more adventures as we dive into the beauty, culture, and experiences that South Africa has to offer.
